The Plaka district in Athens is the area North and East and on the slopes of the Acropolis.
Because of the Acropolis shadowing the entire district, it is one of the shadiest and coolest areas in Athens in the daytime.
Because of its location on the slopes of the Acropolis hill, mand of the roads going towards the Acropolis are stairways rather than roads.
The streets running level along the slope are very narrow as are the houses lining the streets.
The lower part of the Plaka where the slope is less outspoken is the shopping and leisure part of Plaka. This is where most people come and walk along the more or less pedestrian streets.
There are numerous cafes, restaurants and bars in the Plaka taking advantage of the coolness of the Acropolis shadow.
